Terms of service

These terms cover your use of Vulcan Veil: the website at vulcanveil.com (including the web chat, saved chats, and library), the Vulcan Veil desktop app, and the services behind them. Vulcan Veil is run by Crime De-Coder LLC, PO Box 123, Durham, NC 27702 ("we", "us"). By creating an account or using Vulcan Veil, you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy. If you use Vulcan Veil for an organization, you agree for that organization and confirm you may do so.

The preview: public or synthetic data only

Vulcan Veil is in preview. Use it only with public or synthetic data. Do not put into it Criminal Justice Information (CJI), criminal history record information, information from open investigations, personal information you are not allowed to share with an outside service, or any data your agency's policies keep inside its own systems. Vulcan Veil is not certified under the FBI CJIS Security Policy or any similar standard.

Your account

• Give accurate sign-up details and keep them current. An account is for one person.
• Keep your password private. You are responsible for what happens under your account; tell us at once if you think someone else has used it.
• You must be 18 or older.

Team accounts

A team account's owner chooses and pays for the team's plan, invites people, and is responsible for how the team uses Vulcan Veil. Members chat on the team's plan and balance. The owner and managers can see each member's monthly spend and set limits; they cannot see members' chats, files, or saved items. A team plan covers the number of people (seats) it pays for, the owner included; for larger teams than the website sells, contact us.

Acceptable use

Do not use Vulcan Veil to:

• break the law, or help anyone else break it;
• identify people from their faces or images, or build profiles of private individuals;
• harass, threaten, or harm anyone, or produce content that sexualizes minors;
• try to get around our security, the limits on your plan or team, or the sandboxes the app runs code in;
• overload the service, scrape it, or resell or share access without our written agreement;
• open more than one account, or use other people's details, to get more than one free trial.

Model providers have their own usage policies, and requests that break them may be refused. We may suspend accounts that break these rules.

AI answers

Vulcan Veil's answers come from AI models and can be wrong, incomplete, or out of date, even when they cite sources. Web search results come from third-party websites we do not control. Check anything that matters before you rely on it, and do not treat answers as legal, medical, or professional advice. You are responsible for the decisions and products you make with Vulcan Veil.

Your content

You keep all rights to what you put into Vulcan Veil and to the answers you get back. You let us process your content only to run the service for you: to send it to the model you choose, return the answer, and store what you ask us to store. We do not use your content to train models, and we do not sell it. The privacy policy says what we keep and who processes it.

Saved chats and the library

Saved chats and library documents are encrypted in your browser with a key that only your vault passphrase or your recovery code unlocks. We cannot read them, and we cannot recover them for you. If you lose both your passphrase and your recovery code, your saved items are gone for good. Each account has a storage limit, shown on the Saved chats panel.

Plans, billing, and the free trial

• Prices, plan dollars, and model prices are on the pricing page. Model use is charged at the listed prices against your plan dollars first and then your balance.
• Plans are monthly subscriptions, paid in advance through Stripe. They renew automatically until you cancel. Plan dollars reset on the 1st of each month (UTC); unused plan dollars do not carry over.
• Balance top-ups are added dollar for dollar, carry over while you have a plan, and cannot be exchanged for cash.
• Each person or organization gets one free trial. It lasts 7 days, includes the model use shown on the pricing page, needs no card, and ends on its own without any charge.
• Prices do not include taxes, which may be added where they apply.
• We may change prices. A change to a subscription you already have takes effect at a renewal at least 30 days after we email you about it.

Cancellation and refunds

• You can cancel any time from your account page. Your plan stays active until the end of the month you have paid for, and you are not charged again.
• You can switch plans any time; Stripe prorates the difference.
• Payments are not refunded for partly used months, unused plan dollars, or unused balance, except where the law requires it.
• If you were charged in error, or something went wrong on our side, write to us within 30 days and we will make it right, which may be a refund.

Availability and changes

We work to keep Vulcan Veil running and your data safe, but during the preview we offer no uptime guarantee. Features may change, and the service may be interrupted for maintenance or by problems at our providers. We may update these terms; for changes that matter, we will email account holders or show a notice on the site before they take effect. Using Vulcan Veil after a change means you accept it.

Ending your account

You can stop using Vulcan Veil at any time, and ask us to delete your account by writing to us. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, puts the service or other people at risk, or has unpaid charges. When an account closes, its saved items are deleted.

Disclaimers and limits on liability

Vulcan Veil is provided "as is" and "as available". To the extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data, or goodwill, and our total liability for any claim about Vulcan Veil is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of North Carolina, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute goes to the state or federal courts in Durham County, North Carolina, unless the law requires otherwise. Government agencies whose laws require different terms can contact us to agree on them.
